Play: NO EXIT

The Vienna Burgtheater production No Exit premiered in 2022 and was invited to the Bregenz Festival in the same year. The play has received countless enthusiastic feedback and positive reviews. No Exit is a reproduction of Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist classic NO EXIT, which was first performed in Paris in 1944. It is a key work to understanding Sartre’s philosophy of freedom and revolves around themes of captivity, isolation, and the altered perception of time that envelops things when the present is extended to an eternity. The Synopsis of the play is that Inèz, Estelle, and Garcin can only guess as to why they ended up here–in a room somewhere beyond life, without windows or mirrors, and with no way of switching off the light. Surrounded by tower-high walls, their only other contact is with a bizarre valet. Outside? There is no outside. Is this the ultimate hell? The director Martin Kušej is one of the ten characters who have had a significant impact on German drama since the millennium. No Exit will be premiered in Asia at Theater Young from 8-9 June.

It’s a dance of cat and mouse, a dance exploring antagonistic forces. Here, bodies flirt with irony - a desire for joy, a desire for melancholy. Shihya Peng and Marco Di Nardo’s bodies transform into two distorted mirrors – uncovering more about ourselves than we thought we knew. They carry each other, fly, fall, exasperate each other, then get up and walk together. With humor, this show speaks to the young and to the less young.

Something for the kids (and folks who find puppets fascinating)...Theatre YOUNG in Shanghai presents an exclusive two-night engagement of 'Brecht's Ghosts', a haunting performance created and enacted by the innovative Suse Wächter. As the mastermind behind a world teeming with specters from the 20th century, Wächter brings to life over a hundred puppets, eerily echoing the undead who linger in our collective memory. This performance centers around the revered "Household Deity" of Berliner Ensemble, Bertolt Brecht, who is visited by the myriad spirits he encountered throughout his prolonged exile and upon his return to Theater am Schiffbauerdamm. Accompanied by two musicians and a skilled puppeteer, Wächter orchestrates an evening akin to a séance, allowing these diminutive beings with towering presences to enact their drama. The show, performed in German, offers English and Chinese subtitles to weave its audience seamlessly into the fabric of the narrative.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit based on the hilarious movie starring Jack Black is set to rock out at New Bund 31 Theatre. This irresistible new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a supply teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping mind-blowing rock band. With a new score from Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Glenn Slater, book by Julian Fellowes and an incredible cast of kids shredding guitars, pounding drums and rocking out live, School of Rock will test your head, and your mind, and your brain too. A treat for rockers of all ages.

Matthew Bourne returns to Shanghai Culture Square from June 12 to 16 with his globally renowned production of "Romeo and Juliet." This marks his fifth return, continuing his legacy of narrative-driven and intricately choreographed ballets. The show is a modern reinterpretation of Shakespeare's drama, exploring the love story between Romeo and Juliet against a backdrop of societal division. By blending modern dance with classical ballet, Bourne's distinctive style—combining explosive narrative and fluid choreography—promises to captivate with its emotional depth and innovative interpretation. Performances are scheduled for multiple dates, with ticket prices ranging from 380 to 680 rmb, at the main theatre of Shanghai Culture Square.

Chicago: The Musical

The legendary director and choreographer Bob Fosse had the vision for Chicago in 1975 when he obtained the rights from the original book writer Maurine Watkins. He joined forces with the musical team of John Kander and Fred Ebb who had previously written Cabaret, to create the first version of the musical Chicago. It ran for 600 performances until 1979, until it was revived on Broadway in 1996, then a year later in London's West End. The world-famous tale of love, murder and corruption holds the record for the second longest-running show ever to run on Broadway, and will be performed at Shanghai's AIA Grand Theatre between June 20 and 23. Performance is in English with Chinese subtitles. Please note: children under 13 years old are not allowed to enter this show.
